Camping is often surrounded by myths that can make it seem intimidating or uncomfortable, especially for beginners. Many people believe that camping means roughing it on the ground, dealing with dirt and bugs, needing expensive gear, or that it’s only for experienced outdoors people. These misconceptions can discourage many from trying what could be an incredibly rewarding experience.
But the truth is, camping is accessible and enjoyable for everyone, and it can be broken down into three approachable steps that lead you to what I call "real" camping.
Step 1: "Home" Camping
Before heading outdoors, try camping at home. Set up your gear in your backyard or even inside your house. This lets you get comfortable with your equipment and see if you enjoy the experience. It’s a fun way to bring out your inner child and, if you have kids, a chance for them to play and explore safely. If you find joy in this, it’s a good sign you’ll enjoy camping outside.
Step 2: "Controlled" Camping
Next, try camping in a controlled environment like a resort that offers camping options. Here, you can choose to camp fully or move indoors if things don’t go as planned. This step is perfect if you’re unsure about your gear, the people you’re with, or the weather. It’s a low-risk way to test if camping suits you without a big investment. If you enjoy this, you can start planning for the next step.
Step 3: "Real" Camping
Finally, "real" camping means camping at a campsite, whether on foot, bike, motorbike, or car. This can be traditional camping with minimal facilities or more modern sites with basic amenities like toilets. Don’t expect power outlets or strong signals. This is about disconnecting to reconnect with nature, your companions, and yourself. This is where the true benefits of camping shine: improved mental health, well-being, and a deep appreciation for the simple things.
By understanding and moving through these steps, you can overcome the myths and discomforts that hold many back. Camping is more than just an outdoor activity, it’s exploration, exercise, bonding, and a chance to create unforgettable memories.
So, if you’ve been hesitant because of common myths, remember: the benefits of camping far outweigh the challenges. Start small, take it step by step, and soon you’ll be enjoying all that camping has to offer.
